Byers on his bicycle

For the last 15 years, so many of my memories of my Dad were of him either on a bike or talking about being on a bike (or talking about falling off of a bike for that matter).  It was his favorite activity for so many reasons: great exercise, a welcoming community of other riders, and his personal meditation time to think over everything going on in his life.  I remember calling him on countless Saturday afternoons, just starting out my weekend adventures, and he had already been out for a 100-mile ride at the crack of dawn.  To say he was dedicated was an understatement.

Dad was actually training for a 150-mile charity bike ride when he was involved in the accident that would take his life.  As tragic as it was, it gave all of his family a little solace knowing that he died doing what he loved the most.  Not many people get to make their grand exit in such a fashion and it occured to us that he would not have wanted it any other way.

The cycling community here in Lakeland came out in droves to show support after the accident and we really got to see why Dad was so excited to spend time with these wonderful people.  Nearly a year later, I still get approached at random from men and women who say they used to ride with my Dad and tell me how he would brighten their day in some small or meaningful way.  It's comforting to know that he is still remembered so fondly by so many great people.

Through our connection with the amazing staff at Bent's Cycling & Fitness, we plan on doing many more community events including an annual Memorial Ride for Byers and many more bike giveaways for children in need in our area.  Please click the 'Subscribe' link in the menu above to receive our monthly newsletter which will inform you of any upcoming events.
